What to Expect at Your Newborn Photography Session
Those first days with your baby are tender, fleeting, and beautifully unscripted. As a seasoned newborn photographer specializing in newborn photos at home in Greater Vancouver, Kelowna, Vernon and surrounding areas, my goal is to create a relaxed, meaningful experience that reflects your family exactly as you are in this season - cozy, connected, and completely in love.
If you’re wondering what an in-home newborn session looks like, here’s a behind-the-scenes guide to help you feel prepared and confident.
Preparing Your Home for Natural Light
One of the biggest advantages of lifestyle newborn photography is that it takes place in the comfort of your own home. The most important element? Natural light.
Here’s how to prepare:
Choose rooms with large windows - master bedrooms, nurseries, and living rooms are often perfect.
Don’t worry if you don’t have sheer curtains - we bring our own to soften and diffuse the light beautifully.
There is absolutely no need to deep clean or “stage” your home.
We’re moms too. We understand the beautiful chaos that comes with newborn life - the laundry piles, the bottles on the counter, the half-folded blankets. When we arrive, we’ll gently move small furniture or objects if needed to create clean, light-filled spaces - and we’ll always put everything back exactly as we found it before we leave.
You don’t need a magazine-worthy home. You simply need a few pockets of beautiful window light, and we’ll take care of the rest.
The Mobile Studio Setup
Although your session happens at home, you still receive a fully professional experience. We bring a carefully curated mobile setup that allows us to transform your space into a soft, natural studio environment.
This may include:
Neutral wraps and blankets
Simple, timeless textures
Light modifiers such as reflectors and sheer curtains to enhance window light
A professional camera and lens selection suited for both portraits and lifestyle moments
Everything is designed to blend seamlessly into your home while keeping your baby safe, warm, and comfortable. The beauty of a mobile session is that you don’t have to pack a thing - we come to you.
Baby-Led Sessions
Newborn sessions are never rushed. Your baby sets the pace.
We allow plenty of time for:
Feeding breaks
Diaper changes
Soothing and cuddling
Settling into natural sleep
If your little one needs extra snuggles, we pause. If they’re wide awake, we capture those bright, curious expressions. A calm environment is always the priority, and flexibility is built into every session.
Posed vs Lifestyle Moments
Many parents ask about posing. My approach is gentle and comfort-focused.
Posed images are softly guided into natural, safe positions that follow your baby’s cues. There is no forcing or complicated setups - only relaxed, organic placement that keeps baby secure.
Lifestyle moments, on the other hand, unfold naturally. These include:
Rocking your baby near the window
Quiet moments in the nursery
Snuggles on the bed
Tiny fingers wrapped around yours
The final gallery typically includes a blend of both - timeless portraits and heartfelt, real-life connection.
Family Involvement
Your newborn session tells a family story, not just a baby story.
Parents are encouraged to step in for close, intimate portraits. Siblings are guided with gentle prompts to create authentic interaction rather than stiff smiles. And yes - pets are always welcome to join when it feels right and safe.
Extended family members are welcome too. If grandparents happen to be visiting or you’d love to include them in a few meaningful images, we’re happy to incorporate those moments. These early days are often shared with loved ones, and documenting that connection can make your gallery even more special.
A Calm, Comfortable Experience
In-home newborn sessions are designed to feel easy. You stay in your familiar space. Your baby stays comfortable. Everything moves at a peaceful pace.
We handle the light, the small adjustments, and the flow of the session so you can focus on simply being present with your baby. The result is a collection of images that feel natural, warm, and deeply personal - preserving this fleeting season exactly as it unfolds in your home.
If you have questions about preparing for your session, I’m always here to help guide you every step of the way.
