Including Your Pet in Your Newborn Session | Vancouver & Okanagan Photographer

When families reach out to book their newborn session, one of my favorite questions is, “Can we include our dog?”

The answer is always yes.

Because the truth is - they were your first baby.

Your dog or cat (or bunny!) has been there through quiet mornings, long walks, and all the moments that led up to this new chapter. Bringing home a newborn is a huge transition for everyone in the family - including the furry members - and we love honoring that in your photos.

They’re Part of the Story

Newborn sessions aren’t just about documenting how tiny your baby was. They’re about remembering what life felt like in those early days.

Maybe your pup is gently resting their head near the baby blanket.
Maybe your dog is sitting proudly beside you on the couch.
Maybe your cat keeps a curious (and slightly skeptical) distance.

Whatever their personality, it’s real. And that authenticity is what makes your gallery feel like your family.

Years from now, these images will mean even more - especially for little ones who grow up with their loyal companion by their side.

Keeping It Calm and Safe

Safety and comfort are always our top priorities - for baby and for your pet.

We guide the process gently and never force interactions. Many of the sweetest images are created with baby safely posed and pets naturally incorporated nearby. Sometimes we capture a quick, beautiful moment and then your pet gets a well-earned break (and a treat!).

If you're feeling nervous about how it will go, don’t be. We’ve worked with energetic puppies, shy rescues, and big lovable giants. We move at a pace that feels relaxed and manageable.

A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way

To make things smooth:

  • A good walk before the session can help burn off extra energy.

  • Bring a favorite treat or toy for attention.

  • If possible, have an extra set of hands to help guide them when needed.

And most importantly - trust that it doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.

The Photos You’ll Treasure Most

Some of my clients tell me afterward that the images with their pet ended up being their favorites. There’s something incredibly special about seeing your “first baby” meeting the newest member of the family.

Those photos hold so much love. And love - in every form - is what this season is really about.

If you’re planning your newborn session and wondering whether to include your pet, We say absolutely. Let’s document your whole family, just as you are.
