Why It's So Important to Photograph Parents, Not Just the Baby | Newborn Photographer
When parents book a newborn session, it's often because they want to remember every tiny detail of their baby - the little fingers, sleepy stretches, wispy hair, and tiny toes that seem to change overnight.
But years from now, some of the most treasured photographs may not be the ones of the baby alone.
They may be the photographs of you together.
Many new parents hesitate to step in front of the camera. You're adjusting to life with a newborn, likely running on little sleep, and may not feel your best. It's completely understandable. Yet these are often the photographs that become the most meaningful over time.
Your baby won't remember the nursery you carefully decorated or the swaddle blanket you chose. What they will cherish someday are photographs that show how deeply they were loved from the very beginning.
One day, your child will look back at these images and see themselves cradled in your arms. They'll see the way you looked at them, the way you held them close, and the joy and tenderness that filled those early days. Those photographs become part of their story.
As photographers, we often hear adults say, "I wish I had more photos with my parents."
Rarely does anyone wish they had more photos of themselves alone.
The images that hold the most value are usually the ones that capture relationships - the connections between people who matter most.
During newborn sessions, some of my favorite moments happen when parents simply hold their baby close. There's no need for perfect posing or forced smiles. The beauty comes from the genuine connection that already exists. A gentle kiss on the forehead, a sleepy cuddle on the bed, or a quiet moment spent gazing at your newborn often creates the most meaningful photographs in the entire gallery.
These images are not just for you.
They're for your child.
They are a visual reminder of where their story began and the people who loved them before they could even remember.
Years from now, when your baby is no longer a baby, these photographs will become more valuable with every passing year. They will tell a story that words alone never could - a story of belonging, connection, and unconditional love.
That's why I always encourage parents to step into the frame.
Not because you need perfect photos of yourself, but because your children deserve photographs with you in them.
